If you don’t know Auld Raes then you really should. From the outside, you would easily mistake it for a little outbuilding nestled in the car park of East Kilbride’s village. You would walk by it if you didn’t know what you were looking for. However, when you walk inside, everything changes.
Decor / Space
When you walk in you are immediately welcomed to the bar (hurrah!) where you wait to be seated. The restaurant is pretty small inside and complete over two levels, it reminds me of a giant conservatory with its PVC windows. At some points I felt quite crammed and sitting near the toilet doors is always a bad thing in my opinion. However, I have visited the restaurant as part of a party of 9 and were more than comfortable.
Menu / Food
Auld Raes offers a variety of authentic, home-cooked Scottish food so when we were greeted with a Sunday/Lunch menu, I found it difficult to decide between the Chicken Balmoral and the Sunday roast! I eventually went for the chicken because I’m a sucker for haggis and whisky sauce. As always, the food was cooked to perfection, the chicken was tender and the haggis was moist and crumbly. The whisky sauce was also worth a mention, I’ve been to placed where the alcohol was so overbearing I might be over the drink and drive limit! But Auld Raes was perfect.
The rest of my family got the Sunday roast and the fish of the day. The roast comes with two different cuts of meat and you can have both or one or the other – plus the Yorkshire pudding was gigantic! There were no complaints on our end, and certainly no leftovers on the plate.
We went for two courses, main and dessert. I’m a bit of a fussy eater so strawberry and vanilla ice cream was my limit. I must say overall we were all happy with our choice for a birthday lunch.
If you’re looking for something quirky with excellent Scottish food I highly recommend Auld Raes. It certainly has something for everyone on their menu.
